Hi StephenWales,
Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities. Here to help.
We understand you have concerns regarding audio quality issues while on phone calls as well as while using Bluetooth devices. Happy to help with this.
It may be best to look at these as two separate concerns, as they may or may not be related. First lets discuss the static others are hearing on their end of a phone call with you.
Have people you speak to mentioned the static is improved when you switch to speakerphone or a headset? Different microphones are used in these cases, so this would help to isolate if a specific microphone is producing more feedback.
Do these call quality issues occur regardless of your location? For example, is it better when you are out and about instead of at home? Do these complaints occur on regular phone calls as well as on FaceTime calls? There are some settings related to cellular calls you may want to adjust to test if these features are impacting the behavior.
Head into Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. There will be a section called Voice and Data here. Options will vary by your carrier, but disabling Voice over LTE is a step you can take to see if this impacts call quality. Wi-Fi calling is an additional feature which will utilize Wi-Fi networks to improve your call quality. Ultimately, calls are a feature of your carrier network so you may wish to contact your carrier for troubleshooting. The next article discusses actions to take to isolate calling issues, such as trying a FaceTime call and comparing the quality to a regular call.
If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker
Regarding the static sound while connected to a Bluetooth device. This may be an expected result of interference in the environment. How far away are your phone and Bluetooth speaker when this occurs? Keeping them close together will reduce interference from other devices in the area. Apple does have a support article regarding this topic, take a look at the article below.
