red bubble icon that counts the length of your call

If my phone is indicating it is recording sound or my screen (red bubble/connected call time display bubble icon) how do I know which function is being carried out; ie: My screen or sound? Is it me recording or the party on the other end of the call?

It has nothing to do with recording. A red or orange dot means the microphone is on; that is ALL it means. It would be very hard for the person on the other end of the call to hear you if the microphone wasn’t on, unless they were in the same room with you.

Ah, I misunderstood. I don’t see a bubble. I see a green oval behind the clock in the status bar on the Home screen or in apps when I am on the phone. It doesn’t show how long the call, it just displays the current time on my phone. That oval will be behind the clock whenever there is any background app running, such as Maps. The color tells you what is running. From→Status icons and symbols on your iPhone - Apple Support
