Weird characters in text received

I was texting my niece and when she replied from her Samsung phone, I got her text and something else that was in the same format as a text but contained characters that resembled kanji but not well versed enough to tell. Suffice it to say, they were unintelligible. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello Bajajim1313,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are looking for some information about a text message you received from a Samsung device. We are happy to help provide some guidance.

Are you only receiving these strange characters when getting text messages from Android devices? Sometimes if 3rd party keyboards or font packs are being used that aren't recognized by the iPhone, it will try to convert them as closely as it can but will not be what the other person has input. This could also happen with 3rd party emoji characters that get sent.

We hope this information helps.

Best Regards.
