Numbers app

Is it possible to shift cells in numbers like one can do in excel. I do not want to insert entire columns and rows. Just looking to insert part of a column and row.

Sure. It isn't the same as inserting a cell but the effect will be the same

  1. Select the cells you want to move/shift. To select all the cells to the right of a cell, including that cell, select the cell then use Command Shift Right Arrow. The other arrow keys will select cells in the other directions.
  2. Click and hold anywhere inside the selection box and it will "lift" out of the table.
  3. Drag and drop it to were you want it, which can be anywhere within the table, to another table, or you can drop it somewhere on the sheet to make a new table from it. It will overwrite whatever you drop it on.


To move an entire column or row,

  1. Click on the column letter or row number
  2. Click & hold on the column letter or row number to get it to lift out of the table
  3. Move it to a different position in the table, into another table, or onto the sheet to create a new table from it. You'll see a green bar showing where it is going to be moved. The other columns/rows slide out of the way to make room for it


I find Number's method of moving cells/columns/rows around to be so much better than Excel's.
