There should a few older versions that would then allow the later Mac systems to install.
The 'Mid-2011' Mac mini probably ran the Lion 10.7.5. While the Late 2012 shipped with a
Mountain Lion 10.8.(5) or Mavericks 10.9.(5) ~ My Late 2012 mini Server shipped 10.9.x.
An oldest Yosemite 10.10.(5) download installer may work, IF a second try with recent
download installer El Capitan 10.11.6, doesn't. According to detailed instructions here:
• How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683
The macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, may be OK with your mid-2011; or maybe Mojave 10.14.6.
There's a fair bit of linked info within instructions pages. Be sure to use Safari browser.
According to Mactracker.ca database application, there wasn't a Mid-2012 Mac mini.
Their specs went from Mid- 2011, to Late- 2012; yet Everymac.com has other numbers.

Here is an article that may help.
If the issue persists, here are some steps that may help.
You most likely have a Mid 2011 model, as the Late 2012 model shipped with Mountain Lion, not Lion. It's not the year of your purchase. It's the year that the model was introduced. Click on the Apple menu's, "About This Mac," to properly identify the model of your Mac.
macOS 10.13.6 would be the maximum for that model.
