For how many years are iPhones updated?

I am using an iPhone 4. It stopped updating probably around 2016, but I could still run a number of apps. Now apps have pretty much stopped. If I buy something like an iPhone 11, for how many years can I expect it to be updated? I like to buy phones sim-free and keep them for years. Thanks

There’s no sure way to know; in general, Apple will provide updates for as long as the hardware will support them. Currently all iPhones from the 6S and later support iOS 14, the latest version, and the 6S and later will support iOS 15 when it is released in the autumn. The 6S will be 6 years old come September. Which would imply at least 7 years of support. The iPhone 11 was released in 2019. You might also consider the SE 2nd edition, which is a 6 months newer than the 11.
