Upgrade from 10.9.5 version OS X to a OS X 10.11

My question is if my macbook pro can be upgraded from 10.9.5 OS X to a OS X 10.11 version?

This model is from 2014. How I do this upgrade and if not, do I have to buy a more up to date computer?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and click on El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.

A Mac running 10.8 through 10.10 can be upgraded at least as far as El Capitan, and any 2014 or newer model can run Big Sur.
