My Mac keeps asking me to enter my password for my hotmail account in internet accounts. Is there anyway to stop this? I still get my emails fine in Outlook, everything works OK

You could try deleting any of the keychain entries for that account, then re-enter it again.

Mail has had a long history of getting tripped up by the keychain entries (sometimes there are more than one). However, I don't think I've ever heard of it being a problem with Internet Accounts. Usually, deleting all of the keychain entries for the email account clears it up.

You only have to delete the entries that are used for authenticating the email account, not the ones using your email address for a username on other accounts.

Why is Mail asking for your password?

Mail asks for your password when it is connecting to your email provider, but can't connect to your email account because your email provider isn't accepting your email password.

Your email provider may reject your password for several reasons, including:

  • You're not using your current email password. If you updated the password on another device, make sure that you're using the same password on your Mac.
  • Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you're using Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail requires the appropriate app-specific password.
  • Your email provider deactivated or suspended your account. Contact your email provider for help.

  1. As I said in the question, my email works fine

2. Also as I said in the question, it is the Mac that is asking me to update my password in internet accounts not my email application

3. Your reply is a cut and paste from the article I was replying to, I didn't work then I don't think that it will work now.

The issue is that I keep getting a pop ups asking me to update my password in internet accounts for this account. I go to the internet accounts (helpful link in the popup) and there is no password field. I have no problems accessing my email through my different mail applications on the mac (which suggests that the password is OK and the email provider accepts it so the problem is not on the mail provider / password side) nor do I have problems accessing webmail. So the only issue is this stupid pop-up that is almost as annoying as the two factor authentication pop-up which I cannot use as I have no mobile coverage most of the week and don't want anyway.
