Recover unsaved word doc in iCloud

I just did 3 hours of work in Word and (stupidly) hadn't saved the doc. It's saved in an iCloud folder, not my mac user drive. Autosave is turned on.

I have tried all the techniques online to recover the temp version, but they only seem to be for if you have the doc saved in your hard drive. Is there a way to recover my doc that's saved in iCloud?

Hi danika_n,

I think you alluded to it before, but the folks at Microsoft may have to confirm. Based on your experience, you may need to adjust your workflow to creating the document on your hard drive, saving early and often, and copying the finished document to iCloud Drive. Microsoft support would be the best resource for questions about their Autosave feature.

Take care.

Good afternoon danika_n,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you have a question about a Microsoft document you created and worked on in iCloud.

It would seem the file would have had to be saved if it is showing in iCloud.

Are you not able to open the file, select and copy the text, and then paste it into a new document on your Mac?

You may need to reach out to Microsoft for help with this issue.

Take care.

Hey Judysings, thanks for responding! The problem is that I worked on the document, the computer crashed, then when it reopened, all my changes were lost.

I have autosave turned on, but it seems there is no location for autosaved files in iCloud?

I use iCloud as my standard file location. So yes, the word doc is definitely there and I can still open the original, but I’m wondering where the temp files go if autosave is turned on?
