High ringer volume low text volume

My husbands new iPhone 12 mini has suddenly stopped receiving notifications for texts…so we thought. The ringer volume is great, but the text volume is very low- even when the “sound and haptics” bar is at the highest. He recently set up his Apple Watch so I had him reboot his phone to see if that solved the problem. It hasn’t. We can’t figure it out.

Open "Settings" on the iPhone home screen.
Tap "Sounds" in the settings menu.
Scroll to the "Ringer and Alerts" section, which covers the ringer and message alert sounds.
Drag the volume slider to the right to raise the volume. Drag it to the left to lower the volume.
