Have you blown the dust out of the intakes lately?
What temperatures does this App report? Especially the GPU.
This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.
Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

You're welcome.
Unfortunately, no. There's nothing to do for this thirteen year old iMac than to replace it.
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo makes this a 2008 iMac. It want's to be retired.
If I were you I'd just call this one done and replace it with something newer. Don't put any money into this obsolete tech.
Hello, lubrom.
I agree that this looks like a graphics failure
You don't say if the iMac finally boots successfully or not. If it does not, then diagnosing the problem may be harder
What model - size and year - is the iMac?
Does this only happen at startup?
You might see what happens if you try to reboot in Safe mode; (hold the shift key down at startup). If it's a problem with the graphics software this might tell us something because a safe boot only loads the very basic drivers needed to run the iMac.
It takes a little longer to safe boot so be patient.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?
Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and re-evaluate the issue again after a normal reboot.
Could be your graphics card is failing on your mac, this is not good news
as they are not a serviceable item, you may have to buy a new mac.
Yikes.
One option would be to use Target Disk mode on that old iMac. You can transfer the files to another drive and then wipe the disk using Disk Utility.

If that can't be done, then you could open the Mac and remove the drive and keep it for future recovery or use in an external enclosure with a new Mac.

Thanks for your help
It does not boot, other than in safe mode & even then it shows the same problem with the markings
it's a intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz that is at least 10years old, what I'm showing are the screens I see when I start
if it is a graphics failure, is it something I can replace?
Thanks for your input. How can I know for sure that it's the graphics card? Any other possibility?
thank you, i was afraid that was the case. Any idea how I can wipe the HD so there is no info left on it?
