Why do some bubbles respond with “received” and “sent” or “read”. What’s difference between green and blue bubbles?

Green bubbles are SMS text messages and if you are in the US no carrier uses read receipts. Blue bubbles are iMessages and if the recipient has turned on Read receipts you will get the read message when they read it.
