iPhone 5s won't reset. I need to wipe it before getting rid of it. I have followed instructions for both "no computer" and "with computer." What else can I try?

The third time was the charm. It has now reset and erased. There is one more question: I now have this "activation" window. If I enter the Apple ID and Password now, will it reload everything? Can I just ignore this window, or does it finish the erasure process? Thank you.
The phone has a working home button--everything works fine. When doing the reset, it goes through the whole process and then asks for my passcode ((6-digit). After entering the phone's passcode, another window appears asking for a 4-digit "code" which I don't have. I have tried all my known 4-digit codes to no avail. My phone is about to lock down because of the wrong code.

You need to place the phone in recovery mode. Instructions for that are in the article you came from.

You need to remove activation lock in order to fully erase the phone. So you need to enter the Apple ID and Password to finish the process.
