Facebook issues on iMac and iPad and Safari

On the iMac, Facebook is frequently not connecting (cannot establish secure connection) or else Facebook does not load images. Using the report problem feature in Facebook maybe yields a solution after some time (at least twice FB performed properly after reporting). I have also deleted history and website info from Safari and tried Chrome, rebooted the modem. Recently I have changed to a new ISP and have updated the system (10.13.6 High Sierra).

On the iPad, Facebook will open but not load images.

Website checkers say Facebook is up and no reported problems. Frustrating.

Ideas? Thanks!

macOS Safari

Go step by step and test.

1. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

2. Startup in Safe Mode. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac.

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and

the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

3. If Safari doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected

No luck yet connecting to Facebook.

  1. Safari with shift key: same result.
  2. Startup in safe mode: same result.
  3. Safari and network: Reloading doesn't help. Am not running Safari extensions.

Regarding network connections, I need some help troubleshooting.

In a Zoom session this morning a message appeared several times: internet connection is unstable.

I logged into CenturyLink (my DSL and ISP) and chatted online with their support.

They say everything is good on their side.

I am connected at about 5Mbs.

I suspect there is something in my network settings or modem settings to be changed.

Is there some way I can get on the phone with a specialist?

It gets complicated. My chat with Apple was not helpful, other than discovering my iMac is considered "vintage" (late 2012) and raising hardware suspicions. The iPad is similarly old and unsupported.

In a zoom session yesterday a message appeared saying the internet connection is unstable. Chatting online with CenturyLink the representative said everything looked good on their end.

Using my wife's cell phone I created a personal hotspot. Connecting to the internet this way enabled the iPad to display FB images but on the iMac, Facebook still wouldn't open: "Safari can't make secure connection to the server".

I need to speak with people at CenturyLink/Apple and go over my modem/network settings. There's some voodoo involved.
