macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers If the computer is listed - Yes Big Sur can be installed. If Not listed - it can not download and install Big Sur. The Profile in original question is showing iMac 2012 and later

If can not install Big Sur >>

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install. Make sure to use Only Safari to commence the download as Other may not work

Make a Time Machine Backup Before attempting. Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina and Big Sur Only support 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation.

Agree with previous posters assessment and for the reasons outlined in that posting.

Do I have a Rescue Plan In-Place. This comprises having 3 Backups using 2 methods and 1 Off Site incase of Theft, Loss or Natural Disasters. A Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS. For addition purposes - two Tested Bootable Clones each to separate external drives. This is insurance incase the upgrades goes sideways. At least one Tested Clone and / or Time Machine Backup should be Off - Site

You cannot install an OS on a disk that is being used for backups.

It i also not prudent to backup your mac on to the same disk you

are backing up data from.

The point of creating a backup is to safeguard your data should your macs internal drive fail.

If you are saving backups to your macs internal drive and the drive fails you will lose

all your data and the backups.

Always make backups to an external drive.
