iPhone to MacBook synch

My finder window shows the iPhone synching and/or updating when using my laptop. It never seems to finish, but the progress indicator keeps turning. If I want to shut down the computer, I get a message that says there is an iOS operation in progress, so I can't shut down. If I really need to shut down, I need to do a hard reset, rather than the software shut down. The finder and iTunes are unresponsive to my request to stop the synch or to eject the iPhone. What can I do to resolve this?

iPhone XS, iOS 14

Have you run Disk Utility's 1st aid on the Mac's Internal drive?
