I'm not sure if another program is interfering but when I use CMD+V it won't paste the clipboard but instead pastes √ symbol. If I use the mouse to paste the clipboard is pasted as expected.

Thank you, this helped me figure out the problem. I'm using a Logi MX Key's keyboard and oddly the OPT+V pastes the clipboard. I'll figure out how to undo it so it pastes as it should using the CMD button.
You must be hitting the Option key instead of the ⌘ key. The Option key + v gives you √.
When I use CMD V to paste I get this symbol √ not the clipboard
