SMS (Green Messages) Read status not updating

When I read an SMS (green message) on my iPhone, the read status does not update on my iPad (or Mac for that matter) in Messages.

The implementation of synching messages, specifically SMS green messages, across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch seems not to be up to the normal Apple standards. Why does SMS messages not update on my watch when read or deleted from my phone? this is really my only complaint with the Watch, would like to see that fixed.

Anyone have a solution for the first item?

What you're seeing is expected behavior. "Read" status is only available on iMessages (blue).
