iPhone 12 contacts
when I add a contact as a favourite it adds it as a message icon - does not allow me to set it as a phone shortcut. I have tried everything

After you tap Add to Favourites after opening the Contact, three options will pop up.
Select the Phone section and select the Phone number. Watch the GIF below.
