M1 MBA (2020) - No Haptic Feedback from Trackpad

I've had my M1 MacBook Air for 8 months, and still haven't figured out how to get haptic feedback from the trackpad. I've tried all the preference settings for the Trackpad, resetting NVRAM, SMC, etc.

What am I missing here??? I really would like to get some sort of tactile feedback when clicking on the Trackpad, but I can't figure this out.

I've seen responses from Apple that apply only to Intel MBAs, but nothing referring to the M1 MBAs.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.4

Hi there Teddy_B.

Same issue as Eric over here, Haptic feedback disappeared from one day to the other. It came back for a bit but it has now disappeared completely.

  • Haptic feedback has been set up correctly in system preferences, changing the settings made no difference.
  • I have updated macOS, I even reinstalled the entire OS via Recovery.
  • Same issue in Safe Mode.
  • Same issue on a new Administrator account.
  • Diagnostics test gave the code: ADP000 No issues found.
  • Rebooted the MacBook Pro M1 multiple times, without any effect.
  • Was looking into resetting SMC and NVRAM but I don't think it works for M1.

What do I do next? I would really like the haptic feedback to return.

Thanks for the suggestions - here's what I can tell you:

  1. Force touch has always worked fine, and it works fine under all your suggested tests, and my trackpad settings match the documentation. BUT: there is no haptic feedback from the trackpad!
  2. My software is fully up to date.
  3. In safe mode, nothing changes. Force touch works fine, and there is NO haptic feedback, regardless of the settings I choose.
  4. I added a Test User, logged in as that user, and saw no changes.
  5. I returned to my regular user account, and nothing has changed - the behavior remains the same.

I should mention that my volume is turned up to full (I assume this is part of the haptic feedback?) but I hear no sound when "clicking" the trackpad.

What's next?

Teddy_B: I thought I had responded to this long ago, but apparently I did not. The diagnostics ran successfully (both several weeks ago, and again today), with no issues found.

Should I be heading to the Apple Store to meet with someone at the Genius Bar, or do you have any other suggestions?

Lacking haptic feedback,

Eric

Hello Eric Ziering,

We understand that the haptic feedback is not working as expected on your MacBook Air, and we’d love to help. You’ve completed some great troubleshooting steps so far. First, we’d like to verify that everything is set properly as shown here: How to use the Force Touch trackpad

If the issue persists, let’s proceed with the following steps. Completing these steps allows us to further isolate the issue:

Update macOS on Mac

• Access safe mode to verify if you experience the same behavior: Start up your Mac in safe mode

• Test the issue in another user account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Thanks for reaching out. Stay safe and well!

Eric Ziering,

Thanks for providing us with the additional details and completing those steps. At this time, we’d like to verify if the issue is hardware related. To do so, we’d like to perform a diagnostic test as shown here: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

Please provide us with any reference codes that you receive.

Best wishes!
