i have an iMac with macOS high sierra version 10.13.6 - it is retina 5k 27 inch late 2014 version with 4 ghz intel core i7 16 gb memory - what is the highest version of os an can upgrade to and how?

Your iMac can run the current version of macOS 11 Big Sur.

To find the details about your Mac model, click the Apple  icon at the top left of your screen and choose About This Mac.
