Convert .avi files

How do I convert .avi files to play correctly? They no longer work with Quick Time Player.

iMac 27″, macOS 11.4

Try converting to .mp4 with H.264 video and AAC audio using e.g. HandBrake. The app features presets to help you get the correct settings easily.
