According to Apple, WatchOS 5 or later is needed for competitions: Share your Activity and compete with friends with your Apple Watch – Apple Support

The Series 1 Apple Watch (not original version!), supports WatchOS 5 so it should work for you :) watchOS 5 adds powerful activity and communications features to Apple Watch - Apple (UK)
