Apple Watch and missing GPS data

Dear community,

my 2 most recent activities with Apple watch (series3), a hike and a run on 2 consecutive days appear to not record part of the GPS data. It seems that in both occasions it started recording the GPS about 35 minutes into the workout. During the activities it operated normally showing time and kilometers, heartbeat, etc…

I only learned about the issues after loading the data into Strava, but it seems already in correct in the work out app, as the map within the app isn’t showing it correctly.

Is there any familiarity with this issue?

Thanks in advance.

I have this issue as well.

Apple Watch Series 3 GPS only model, with Outdoor Walk and Outdoor Hike. Short workouts are fine, it seems any workout longer than about 1h50m or so seems to have recorded the total distance and time correctly (eg 13.8km 3h23m), but the GPS map shows only last 1h50m worth of data, in the 13.8k example, this was 8k or so.

I always have my iPhone with me.

It's happened to me at least 3 times over last few months. I wondered if it was a storage issue, however I after checking each time it happened, the watch has between 2.1GB and 2.8GB free. I checked the Workout settings, Power Saving mode is off, and I have turned off auto-pause, and all the start/stop reminders, and Press to Pause are off, all with no improvement. I updated to latest WatchOS 7.6 yesterday, problem is still there.

Note this is different to the problems a lot of people had back in 2020 where there is no GPS data for the entire workout. I had that issue back then too, and it was resolved by one of the WatchOS updates.

Workout map route colors explanations:

Yellow is the average pace.

Green is the fastest pace.

Red and orange are the slowest paces.

All sections are based on averages for that section and length of time to complete.

If there are grey dots on the route this is a weak or non existent GPS signal. The dots are where the watch is filling in the gaps.

To see the map, you must turn on route tracking. On the iPhone, go to "Settings > Privacy > Location Services" and turn Location Services on.

  1. Next tap Apple Watch Workout and then tap While Using the App.
  2. Then tap on maps then tap While Using the App.
  3. Finally tap on System Services and turn on Motion Calibration & Distance.

Another place to check is on the watch in "Settings/Privacy/Location Services" and make sure this is turned on. Then scroll down to Apple Watch Workout and select While Using the App.
