Using Dual SIM During International travel

If I turn off my U.S. based cell plan when traveling in another country, but then turn it back on whenever I am on wifi, will I receive any messages I missed while the plan was off?

I travel internationally a good bit and want to be able to use a local plan whenever I'm in another country. But I don't want all my contacts who have my U.S. number to have to keep track of a bunch of different international numbers or my location. Dual SIM seems like an excellent solution for this. Previously, whenever I've traveled out of the country, I've kept my phone on airplane mode and then was able to receive messages and voicemail whenever I connected to wifi through either iMessage or wifi calling. Since most of my contacts are Apple users, using iMessage and FaceTime has been especially easy whenever wifi is available. With dual SIM, however, in order to use a local plan wherever I am traveling, I cannot have airplane mode on. But if I turn off my U.S. plan, it appears any messages or calls sent to that number while the plan is off won't come through even after I turn it back on.

Essentially I'd like my U.S. contacts to be able to reach me on my U.S. number whenever I'm on wifi and my local contacts to reach me at any time on my local number. Is that possible using the dual SIM feature?

SMS messages cannot work over Wi-Fi, they use the cellular voice chanel, unless you have Wi-Fi calling. And even then, ask your carrier.

SMS messages are held for a short time if you are not online when they are sent, but they will eventually be discarded. How long they are held is up to your carrier.

You should check out your carrier’s international roaming plans; AT&T, for example, has a plan that extends your home plan when traveling. You pay $10 for any day when you make or receive calls or texts that use cellular connections, but not for Wi-Fi connections if you have Wi-Fi calling.

I think most other carriers in the US have competitive plans now.

Hello RNoelJ13,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We want to help with your questions about using a Dual SIM while traveling internationally.

Regarding questions specific to your cellular plan, how text messages come through, and if your US cell plan will be impacted by traveling, we'd recommend reaching out to your cellular provider.

They will be able to advise how their plan and your SIM works when you travel internationally, if you will get charged not turning on Airplane mode and if you get texted on that number while out of the country.

Have a good day.
