Anti-virus apps on macOS can be problematic. Their use very often interferes with the processes and proper operations of the OS.
Anti-virus apps are never recommended to be installed here in the communities. MacOS is very capable of keeping itself and your data secure. Generally speaking there still isn't any third-party anti-virus that works well with current Apple computers.
(I'm no lawyer, but...) I suggest that HIPAA requirements may already be met by the built-in protections of the macOS. Those protections include XProtect, GateKeeper and Malware Removal Tool (MRT), all built into the OS. In addition, you can also use disk encryption to secure the data on your laptop should it be lost or stolen.
