Your old sim card won't work because your old 4G sim card works with 4G phones like iPhone 11. iPhone 12 Pro Max is a 5G phone so you will need a 5G sim card
That is incorrect.
The old SIM would work fine with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, the new iPhone would not be able to use 5G.

Thanks for confirming that! I thought it was the case but wasn't 100% sure.
Note that, although the same SIM will fit in both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12, you may need to get a new SIM from your carrier to get 5G service.

Since my answer is incorrect, please disregard it
The sim card holders are hard to open. I used a safety pin when I swapped. You can get a video tutorial on how to do it here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8m_xfVgxkZI
