What I mean by this is that I will run into an app where the usual key command will not work. At this point, I am not able to use command/i for italic, it is grayed out in the menu. My thought is that I must have put in the same key combination at some time and it is interfering, but I don't know how to trace that. I looked at the shortcuts for this app but don't see it there. Is there some way to track there a keyboard input is going?

Open Sys Prefs>Keyboard>Shortcuts, are other App Shortcuts listed?
If not in the affected Apps work though all the Menus to see what is using it.

Figured it out. I was using the font Lucida Grande and it does not have the italic format. I did not know that. Changed to another font and it works.

Thanks. I already did the check with other apps and there was nothing. I have Keyboard Maestro so went in and set up an action that would format the text to italic. DId not work, get a message back that the menu item is disabled. Odd.
I could try but likely won't work. The message I get back using Keyboard Maestro attempt is that the command/i menu item in the program is "inactivated." So I don't think any key command can access it. The puzzle is how it got inactivated. Maybe just corruption.
