"What happens if you activate Mark As Lost
Mark as Lost remotely locks your missing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac with a passcode, keeping your information secure even if your device goes missing. You can also display a custom message with your phone number on the Lock screen, and keep track of your device's location.
Once Mark as Lost is activated, Apple Pay is disabled, if you have it set up on the device. A confirmation email is sent to the primary email address associated with your Apple ID. When you recover your device, you will need to unlock it with your passcode."
Did you add a custom message, preferably one with some neutral contact method such as a toss-away email address that automatically forwards to one you usually use? I only say this because if it was a thief who ended up with it they would love to send you fake messages from "Apple" inviting you to log into bogus web sites so they can get your log-in information and then they can use your iPad, plus maybe your Apple ID too. On the other hand there is a remote possibility some well-meaning person did end up with it and you stand a slight chance of getting it back. Just be careful.

You provide no background to this. If it was stolen, call the police. If you forgot it at work and it says it is where you work, go to your office and pick it up.
Thanks for this. I don't remember if I had a custom message set up. If I did, it would probably have had my phone number and not my e-mail address, though as I wrote, I don't remember, and by now they'd have called me since they'd be receiving the message. And I haven't received any e-mails. But I'll definitely be more alert about what might happen.
I guess I'll just let it go. It's been two years and I replaced that iPad right away with a newer model. And I've learned to be a lot more careful about checking that seat pocket before getting off the plane. A cautionary tale.
Again, thanks for your help.
Sorry about that and thank you for replying. It's an iPad I left on an airplane about two years ago. I reported it to the airline. They searched for it for three months and then closed the case. My guess is someone found it, held it, and is now trying to use it, which is why I've received several e-mails in the last two days telling me that Find My has found my iPad. Whoever is trying to use it lives in northern Mexico. I live in southern Mexico.
Is there anything I do? I'm guessing they can't get into it. And guessing I might not be able to get it back. I doubt getting in touch with the police will do much good.
