How do I move/install apps and their files on an external drive?

I would like to upgrade to Big Sur from Catalina but I do not have enough storage. I rarely use iMovie yet it takes considerable space for the app and its iMovie Library.imovielibrary file on my hard drive. My hope is I can move iMovie and other rarely used apps to my external drive yet have them listed in my Launchpad as shortcuts.

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.15

If the Applications, in question, are part of Previous Purchases ( Owned ) in your account of Apple Apps Store. The application can be removed to create the space you what for upgrading to Big Sur. Once Big Sur is installed - the removed Applications can be re-downloaded from the New Apple Apps Store.

But, guessing the computer might have the tiny 128 GB SSD ? If so, this will only be a temporary solution. The internal drive really does need to have at least 50 GB Empty Space Available ( Officially 35.6 GB ) for the upgrade to be successful.Poertitions of this is for the Big Sur Installer, expansion and installation

Additionally, depending on the app, you may or may not be able to move it because there are supporting files elsewhere and some apps should/can only be run from the main drive. Apps by themselves usually are not that big. You need to rethink this to move things like photos, videos, movies, etc. off your drive - they are usually the "space hoggers". And, if you do move an app and delete it on your internal drive, you cannot have them show as shortcuts in your Launchpad - that shows apps in your Applications folder on your internal drive.

Welcome and Thank you too :-))

Well that is an option but certainly there is another option without the purchase of new equipment.

It would involve pretty much removing almost everything from the machine thereby making space for the Big Sur to download. Not Installing but creating a Bootable Installer of Big Sur. Now, need confirmation this is the machine you want to install Big Sur onto - MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.15.

Understand - the next possible instructions will involve Booting from the Bootable Installer of Big Sur and then Wiping the Entire Internal Drive of everything. Nothing will remain and no do overs.

Should you wish to explore this avenue - please advise and will provided detailed instructions - step by step.

Further notation - the machine has at least 8 GB RAM otherwise the experience in Big Sur will not great versus the effort to install it.
