Mail will not send

My mail app suddenly stopped sending messages. Originally it looked like a certificate trust issue, which I tried to fix (unsuccessfully). The mail would show up in the sent box, but never arrive. I began trying to follow suggestions in the Apple support community as well as other online forums and now nothing will even leave the outbox. I looked at this on the Apple forum, but it's from 2018 and none of this seems to apply.

My mail works fine on my phone and iPad. Any suggestions? I understand that I can't reinstall the app and I'm afraid to mess with it too much or I'll lose all the mailboxes that are on the Mac (I'm not worries about the ones in iCloud).

In weird situations such as this, it is often best to begin with some basics. Unfortunately, you have failed to tell us what things you've tried, so we can't know what has or has not been tried. First, I would start in the Safe Mode. Press the Shift key at startup. It can take up to 10 minutes while the computer does some repairs to the OS and clears out its caches. Then see if the problem is still there. If not, restart normally and check. Of course you should go into Mails settings to confirm that they are still correct for sending. Please let us know hoe it goes.
