Time machine backup in built in SSD drive?

Just purchased a new M1 MacBook Pro. WHAT AN UPGRADE from my 2010 MacBook Pro 😅

can I setup TimeMachine to save files to the existing SSD drive that comes with the Mac. This is temporary until I purchase an external drive solely used for TimeMachine. (I have not played with TM settings yet in BigSur)

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.4

I would not recommend it. Buy an external drive.

If you value your user data—

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

You can even pull the old drive from the 2010 and stick it in an enclosure for that matter—

see OWC/MacSaless for external drives or 2.5 SSD that fit an enclosure:

other external options, there are many:

SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD
