You also want to make sure you are already using macOS 10.13+ before installing a new third party NVMe SSD since the laptop's system firmware needs updated before you can use a third party NVMe SSD.
As @muguy mentions you want to make sure to have a good backup before you do anything else in case something goes wrong even if you are "just" upgrading macOS.
