MS Office updated last week, all went fine till Outlook. It came back new but totally empty, all folders and emails gone, view settings lost, etc. Continued updating Big Sur OS to 11.4, but no change for Outlook. Tons of important company info I need to get back. TimeMachine backup drive quit working at the same time, but my desperate need is to recover Outlook.

In the midst of trying all sorts of solutions, I happened to click on Tools and noticed "New Outlook" was checked. From pure curiosity I unchecked it - et voilá - everything is suddenly restored!! Leaving this here in case it happens to someone else.

Unless you save the files locally to your hard drive, chances are you'll be able to recover the emails directly from Microsoft's servers.
Thx to OP for pointing out the uncheck Tools/New Outlook feature.
I am having a similar experience with a twist: the only accounts I can see with the “New Outlook” are non-Microsoft. So that needs a new double-exploding head icon.
