Messages not syncing between phone and watch

I recently switched service providers for both my phone and watch. Now, my watch will show the little message icon as if there are unread messages even if I already reviewed the messages on my phone. It also acts like the messages I send out need to be read.

I have unpaired and paired the watch multiple times, I have turned off notifications and restarted the phone and watch then reenabled notifications, I have closed out messages on both the phone and watch, and nothing seems to work. Has anyone else had this issue? It’s very frustrating.

It appears that you have an issue with your Apple Watch showing new Messages for those messages that have already been read on your iPhone. We want to help. Are both your iPhone and Apple Watch updated?  If not, that would be a good next step.  It is a good practice to back up your iPhone before updating.

Test to see if the issue remains after updating.
