Text message mystery. I received a disturbing text from a person with same last name as a nephew.

I received a disturbing text from a person with same last name as a nephew. Within 30 seconds of my reading it, the text disappeared entirely. I confirmed within a minute or so so that the message was not sent by my relative. At the time my iPhone was in use over mobile signal, not via internet. Any thoughts?

Hello bob chandler,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities!

We see that you got a text that disappeared after reading it and are not sure why you received it.

We also see that you already referred to Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams.

We’d be happy to help you!

We’d recommend checking your storage space first through the steps in How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch if the message disappeared due to low storage space.

You can also see if your messages are being forwarded to any other devices through the steps in How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac.

You may want to reach out to your carrier if the message was not an iMessage per About iMessage and SMS/MMS.

Take care.
