SIM update enables VoLTE, trashes Battery life iPhone 12 Pro

I had an old sim from my carrier that carried over from several iPhones back.

Last week my carrier pushed a sim update that now enables 5G and 4G VoLTE.

The result is no noticeable difference in speed (was already very fast) no difference in sound quality and a dramatically reduced battery life by at least 30%.

Changing 5G auto to 4G does nothing.

I can see through the SpeedSmart test app that it is now testing using LTE, a label that app has never shown before on this phone. It does show an increase in speed, which is totally irrelevant to me because the 4G speeds have always been a consistent 95-98 mbps which is plenty fast.

So is there anyway to revert to the old settings and recover my battery life?

Looks like the sim update botched some more settings. Caller ID could also not be enabled. After contacting my provider they made some remote changes that seems to have also helped battery life. Seems the phone was overzealously querying the network because of the initial wrong settings. I'm still loosing battery life at a rate of 5% an hour with light use, which is more than I'm used to on this phone, but I suppose that's manageable.

On a somewhat related note, does call via wifi on or off effect battery life?

Hello Kees de Wit,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support communities. We understand that you are having issues with the battery life since your carrier pushed a sim update. We would love to provide you support on this.

Reverting back to the SIM status prior to the one tat your carrier pushed isn't possible with steps from Apple Support communities because your carrier owns that SIM card. You can contact your carrier to see if there is anyway to revert back.

To address your issue with your battery we would recommend a couple of resources:

iPhone Battery and Performance

Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan

Since there was such a large reduction in battery life, you may need to contact Apple Support to have them run remote diagnostics on your battery.

Thank you for allowing us to support you.

Have an awesome and productive day!
