Keyboard and trackpad not working after waking up from sleep

I have a MacBook Pro Retina (Early 2015) that is currently running macOS Big Sur, it was installed a few weeks ago without any problems until now.

The keyboard and trackpad does not respond after waking up from sleep this morning, the keyboard does not light up and the caps lock key light does not light up when pressed. I have connected a USB keyboard and mouse and they both work correctly. There has never been any liquid damage, it has never been dropped and never had anything dropped on it in any way.

I have reset the SMC and the NVRAM as per the instructions. I have also reinstalled Big Sur from the recovery mode. Both solutions did not fix the problem.

When I reset the SMC I was able to use the internal keyboard, however I needed to use a USB keyboard to reset the NVRAM as well as to enter recovery mode.

The haptic feedback on the trackpad is “clicking” as normal when powered on, however it does not move the cursor nor does it register any “clicks”. The caps lock key light does not respond.

I would really appreciate any possible solutions as I am unable to go to the Genius Bar due to a COVID lockdown, and I need my MacBook to work from home.

Thanks.

Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

(get at least three chime repeats when holding the NRAM Reset - no harm here to force the issue)

If no resolve I would try simply reinstalling the macOS on top of your existing macOS to sort anomalies:

Hey Rocky, what you describe seems similar to the problem I had over here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252950157, if it also includes only the POWER button working. My problem started with fans not turning on, then my keyboard, and trackpad stopped working. Your fans not working may have gone unnoticed, especially if your power was plugged in (producing heat). But as for the K + T, there's a solution there that worked for me, maybe it will for you too. It involves going to recovery. It sounds screwy, but my keyboard and trackpad have been working without problems for about 3-4 days now.

Thanks for your suggestions, unfortunately I’ve tried resetting the SMC, NVRAM and I’ve reinstalled the macOS again from Recovery and the problem hasn’t gone away.

I’ve also booted into Safe Mode after reinstalling macOS, and the problem still persists.

I’ve also had a look at the recently installed programs (Microsoft Teams a month ago) but I didn’t have any problems after installing it.
