Mac Mini M1 no audio over HDMI with FaceTime

I’ve seen this elsewhere, but wanted to open a new thread on this. No problem with the 2014 model this one replaced, so very disappointed that this is an issue as the built-in speakers are rubbish for any kind of conference call. I can hear the phone ring through my speakers, but when the call connects, no sound at all.

Hello Sean Aaron,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you're having an issue with the sound when connected with an HDMI cord, while using FaceTime, on your Mac Mini M1. We'd like to help. Do you notice this when booting up in safe mode? Start up your Mac in safe mode

If so, try creating a test user account, to see if you're seeing it there, too: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Do you notice this when using other HDMI cords?

Also, we'd like to make sure your Mac is up to date, with help here: Update macOS on Mac

Take care.

Hello,

Same with me. Brand new Mac mini M1. No audio output in HDMI during calls. Audio works fine even in FaceTime. But when the call starts, the audio is gone. Same beahvior using WhatsUp.

Even tried an adaptor (USB-C to HDMI), instead of using the HDMI port on the Mac itself. But amazingly, the behaviour is the same.

Talked to Apple. They officially recognised in the written chat that this is a bug.

The asked me to do all sorts of tests. Just wasted my time.

Also, the issue is good documented here: https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/k5ctyf/no_facetime_audio_on_external_speakers_via_hdmi/

The machine is up to date. I’m not inclined to try any of the suggestions you’re making given the same HDMI cable was used with my 2014 Mac Mini as recently as last week (which was also running the latest version of macOS), which didn’t have this issue. Please note only FaceTime is affected - playing music via the Music app is just fine; even Zoom doesn’t have this problem! It appears that something is broken with FaceTime in MacOS for the M1 🤷‍♂️

My workaround has been to connect a 3.5mm to RCA splitter cable which was already connected to my amplifier. Only difference for me now is I have to switch the input on my amp when using FaceTime. For people who aren’t using analogue sound systems it would be a lot more annoying I can imagine.

Hello Nicholas,

This is a known issue by Apple.

I went through all the tests they requested me to du during a long chat with support.

Then, in the end they recognised the issue and that their "engineers were working on a solution"....

I has been 2 months. Just installed the latest update 11.5.2 (20G95). Issue is still there.

The issue is know since even longer, as documented here:

Same issue here. I just bought a new M1 Mac Mini with the intention of using it for FaceTime (and other things) on my LG TV and Marantz surround sound system. The HDMI audio and video work perfectly for everything (including Skype audio/video and Facebook messenger audio/video calls) EXCEPT FaceTime. FaceTime rings through HDMI but falls silent as soon as the call is answered). I will use an audio Jack for time being, but really Apple has to do better than this.
