I fixed the MBP 16 inch bug with heat/fan noise with 1440p external monitors! Please include it in macOS!
I found a partial solution to an extremely common overheating/fan noise bug with the late 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch! The bug only occurs with the specific combination of models with the base 5300M graphics (so I assume this is the model that sells the most) and 1440p external monitors.
1440p is not a super common resolution (so it is understandable that this GPU/resolution combination didn't come up in testing) but isn't that uncommon. For example, I work as a software engineer and my company's standard issue monitors are this resolution. The bug itself is excessive GPU power draw when plugged into this specific resolution, which causes excessive heat and fan noise. My solution fixes this problem, by force enabling HiDPI mode, resulting in significantly less GPU power draw and no fan noise.
I'm sure tons of people have returned their MacBooks due to this bug, so it's definitely in Apple's best interest to fix it! Presumably, it's the last Intel MBP, so may as well make it as good as possible, and might convince more people to buy an Intel MBP 16" while we wait for the Apple Silicon version!
I've put all the details in an article on Medium, with nearly 50K views and many comments saying that this fix worked for their MBP 16". And working with a silent MacBook myself while connected to a 1440p screen has been amazing, when I was previously dealing with fans at 100%.
Please fix it!

EDIT: The article's title on Medium is:
SOLVED: MacBook Pro 16" in clamshell mode is HOT & NOISY with a 1440p external monitor!
