I know I've done it before, but couldn't recall if it was an "export" or "copy/paste" situation. This time when I plugged in my phone and hard drive, however, both options ("export" and "copy") were greyed out. How can I copy icloud photos to a external hard drive on my imac How can I copy icloud photos to a external hard drive without first downloading photos to my imac? I am hoping to get back the higher resolution photos that are in icloud on a external hard drive to enlarge some photos I have taken on my iphone 12 Max. Again, I do not want to erase the 38,000 photos on my iphone; but just copy the hi res photos on ext. drive. Thank you in advance for any advice!

Exporting icloud photos that will not download I need to download all of my photos (mostly icloud photos) from my iphone XR onto my macbook air but it wont let me download most of my photos because the photo wont actually download (they have a ! next to the photo) I need to get every photo onto my mac so I can back them up with external hard drive that way I can delete every photo off of my iphone.. Please help :)

Try using the image capture app on your mac. (find it with CMD-Space, and type in image)

You can choose a folder to put them in then, and could transfer them directly to the external hard drive.
