You need to upgrade macOS to a newer version. A 2012 laptop can run up to macOS 10.15 Catalina which should continue to receive security updates for another year or so. After that you will likely need to begin using a third party browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, or Vivaldi.
You can find links to various macOS installers within this Apple article which also includes optional instructions to create a bootable macOS USB installer:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372
Keep in mind that macOS 10.15 Catalina no longer supports 32 bit aps so make sure you have upgraded your third party 32bit apps to 64 bit apps before upgrading macOS. If you cannot update the 32bit third party apps to 64 bit versions, then you should uninstall them before upgrading macOS. It will be much harder to uninstall 32 bit apps after upgrading to macOS 10.15. Here is an Apple article about 32 bit app support:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208436
If you are running a really old version of macOS and if you have any paid third party apps, then you may need to pay for a new version that is compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina. Check your app compatibility before upgrading to macOS 10.15 Catalina.
Make sure to have a good backup before attempting to upgrade macOS just in case something goes wrong.

Hi Tarnz1064,
We'd be glad to help you upgrade your macOS so your Safari can get updated too. To upgrade your macOS, follow the steps in How to get old versions of macOS. Be sure to check for the check compatibility before downloading the the version you want.
You'll want to note that starting from macOS Catalina and above, 32-bit apps aren't supported anymore. If you have any third-party apps, you'll want to check with their app developers to check for compatibility on these versions. To see how you may be able to reach them, check out How to contact an app developer.
In case you run into any issues, we'd also recommend making sure that all of your data is saved before upgrading. You can learn how to do this from How to back up your Mac.
All the best!
I recommend 10.11 El Capitan if you are not already running something higher. (Even if you expect to go higher.)
It contains a new version of the Mac App Store that makes further Upgrades much easier.
