I inherited and refurbished an old 24" iMac (8,1), presently running OS 10.5.8 what is the latest OS that the system will support?
Hi, I'm not a Mac person - It's been fun dealing with a Mac computer. I finally got the above machine upgraded to OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard -- in order to install El Capitan do I have to go through the progression of 10.6 through 10.10 or can I just install El Capitan over Snow Leopard?
Directly as mentioned, but as a point of caution 10.11 is much more demanding than 10.6.8 and requires at least 4GB RAM for practical use. If your old 24" still has nothing but the original 2GB base memory then El Capitan will not be a happy experience.
