just installed new hard drive

how can I tell if the external hard drive is backing up contents?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Enter Time Machine and look for a file that was added after the drive was installed. As easy way would be to create one on the Desktop, wait for a couple of backups to be made ;and then check.
