My elderly mothers IPad is disabled. Appears she entered the passcode incorrectly too many times. I know the passcode. I do not believe the IPad is backed up. I am able to open Ipad with without wiping it clean? THen use the passcode?

Once the iPad is disabled, it’s disabled.

The only option is to reset the device.

Then set up iCloud backups, as there are various cases where data can be lost, and a forgotten or brute-forced passcode is but one.

Being locked, you need to have this looked at by Apple. Without an original proof of purchase (i.e. receipt), then you may be out of luck.

Your grandson erased your iPad.

Tap or click on the following blue-text link for the reset procedure ➡️

If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support

The reset requires a Mac or Windows system, or a trusted friend or acquaintance with a Mac or Windows system, or a visit to Apple or an authorized repair provider.

Once the reset is done, restore your backup from iCloud, or from your Mac or Windows system.

It’s been my experience that some folks here will then allow the child access to their iPad in response to a reset situation such as this one, and the child can then remove or change or corrupt settings, or delete mail messages or FaceTime or Messages threads, or cause other problems.
