Big Sur crashing randomly when external hard drive is connected

This problem first arose with macOS Big Sur 11.4 and has only gotten worse with 11.5.

I have 2 external hard drives connected to the USB-C/thunderbolt ports on my iMac 18,3 (2017):

  • one is a 2TB G|Drive mobile USB-C
  • and the other is a 2TB LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive which I use for Time Machine backups

Whenever either is connected to my iMac, Big Sur crashes randomly.

I've noticed there are quite a number of users on the internet and in this community who have reported issues using USB connected devices with macOS Big Sur.

I'd like to include below the latest crash report:

I have also run Apple Diagnostics and got the resulting code: ADP000 which appears to indicate that the hardware is OK. Yet, I also ran an EtreCheck Report which observed some kernel panics. I am including the results here:

Finally, I don't know if it's a hardware issue or if it has to do with the component of macOS Big Sur that manages IO ports.

Any help to resolve this issue would be most welcome.

Fusion Drive correct? With a 128 GB SSD and 2 TB Rotations 7200 RPM drive. Am sure you looked at the report too ? Not good Hardware expert but " Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure." and then Mounted Volumes:

disk1s3 - B******P

265.21 GB (74.17 GB used, 191.04 GB free)

MS-DOS FAT12 Have never seen a Fat 12 drive, Yes Fat, Fat32, HFS +, APFS, NTFS, exFat, Ext 4 ( linux ) but never Fat 12 - Any ideas.

Mount point: /Volumes/B******P
