Does anyone else have a huge amount of storage capacity being used by the "Other" file that is greyed out so cannot be accessed?
MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.4

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac as the About this Mac Storage Management is sometimes Off.
and the Final Word from Apple Other: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

Very unfortunate to hear this news, have you found the answer to your question?
Sorry, I can't give you the best solution, I haven't encountered a similar problem, and my storage is in good condition.
Thanks.

About the only thing you can check is to see if Time Machine has created too many snapshots on your system and hasn't deleted them yet after backing up.
Other than that and the previous things mentioned, you cannot manage the category.
