How to remove duplicate photos in Apple's Photos app?

Wow! the most basic function you would require in a photo management app and Apple's Photos app doesn't provide it. Instead, there's hundreds of Appstore apps providing the service. The thing is, there are lots of stories about these apps deleting the wrong files or corrupting your system.

WHY!!! APPLE do you not provide this basic function? I thought Apple apps "Just Work". Are your programming team unable to workout how to write such code to remove these duplicates?

Come on. Just get it sorted you light weights!!!

Hi

We are not apple here, we are users like you - if you want to give feedback to apple, the only channel they might listen to is:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

They are more likely to do something if a lot of people request the same.

In the meantime, if you want to delete duplicates, use an app designed to work with the photos library (Ie one that marks the photos or puts them in an album, and lets you review and then delete them, rather than doing the delete itself.

Do NOT use a general file duplicate finder not designed to work with the photos library. They will damage your photos library and likely cause loss of your photos.

I personally use PowerPhotos (I also use this for copying images and data between libraries)

Another suitable app recommended by experts here is PhotoSweeper (I have no personal experience of this one)

https://overmacs.com/

Both are paid apps. PhotoSweeper is the lowest cost and can recognise duplicates based on content, but PowerPhotos provides a lot of functionality in addition to the duplicate detection.
