my mac has a very dark screen. how can i have the brightness return?

How can I brighten my screen ? It became very dark all of a sudden .

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

If the Mac went to sleep: Put your Mac to sleep or wake it - Apple Support.

The Function keys F1 and F2 darken and brighten the screen respectively. Try that.
