Unfortunately that iMac (27", Mid 2010) has reached the limits of OS upgradability. macOS 10.13.6 is the end of the road. So, no, there is no hope for it.

If you must run any software that requires macOS 10.14 Mojave or newer you will have to buy a newer Mac.

From one user to another (of course) I find I can generally get about 10 years of good use from the Macs my fam and I have purchased before we ultimately give them up. And we don't give them up because they stop working, they simply can't keep up with the software.

Make a Time Machine Backup Before attempting. Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina and Big Sur Only support 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Un-installers, etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation

I purchased a refurbished MacBook Air, circa 2011, with High Sierra 10.13.6. I cannot load Pages or Word, the message says I need 10.14. When I tried to get Mojave 10.14, that wouldn't load either, message says I need a 2012 or later. Is this a case of ageism? Is this MacBook too old to use word processing software?

Your mac is stuck on macOS High sierra 10.13.6 you cannot upgrade to newer OS.

Any Apple apps like Pages require you to be using a newer mac with a newer OS.

Look into the free Libre Office Suite, https://www.libreoffice.org see if it will run

on macOS High Sierra.

No one can answer your question. Please provide the year and model Mac you have. That will determine what OS upgrades it can accept.

That machine is obsolete. It is not capable of running anything higher than High Sierra.

As has already been stated, that machine is obsolete.
